{"id":22,"date":"2012-02-13T14:21:53","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T14:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/s374091098.websitehome.co.uk\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2025-12-04T15:17:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T15:17:27","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/aylesburysociety.org.uk\/","title":{"rendered":"About Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px !important;\">In the 1960\u2019s when Aylesbury was being \u2018upgraded\u2019 to meet the demands of the 20th century, some of the old parts around the parish church of St Mary\u2019s escaped the bulldozers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px !important;\">At that time \u2018listing\u2019 meant little in Aylesbury, but when Prebendal House, an 18th century listed building and former home of the radical politician John Wilkes, was threatened with demolition in 1974 a group of local residents in St Mary\u2019s Square got together to save it and the Aylesbury Conservation Society was formed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px !important;\">The building was saved but most of the gardens and grounds were sold for development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px !important;\">Their job done the new Society expanded its attention to the whole of Aylesbury which was systematically being demolished and rebuilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"400\" width=\"479\" data-init-width=\"2560\" height=\"319\" data-init-height=\"1707\" title=\"DSC_0676\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/aylesburysociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSC_0676-scaled.jpg\" data-width=\"479\" data-height=\"319\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 2560 \/ 1707;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Members receive a quarterly newsletter, usually 20 to 32 pages, packed with interesting articles, news and information<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>We are a registered charity and are members affiliated to <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civicvoice.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span>Civic Voice<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>We welcome new members , individuals families or groups, whether they live or work in the town or in the surrounding countryside or old Aylesburians living far away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"507\" width=\"470\" data-init-width=\"1536\" height=\"313\" data-init-height=\"1024\" title=\"72280003\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/aylesburysociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/72280003.jpg\" data-width=\"470\" data-height=\"313\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 1536 \/ 1024;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Society registered with the Civic Trust (now called Civic Voice), dropped \u2018Conservation\u2019 from the name and membership grew with representatives in all parts of the town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span><span>We hold monthly meetings from September to May&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span><span>which are held on the last Thursday in the month (except in December) at<\/span><\/span><span><span>The Friends Meeting House in Rickford&#8217;s Hill or Council Chamber, 5 Church Street, Aylesbury.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>We have Coach Trips to interesting towns and houses and gardens and w<\/span><\/span><span><span>e often meet other Amenity &amp; Civic Societies for tours of their town.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>In May we have a guided walk of local interest.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"420\" width=\"438\" data-init-width=\"950\" height=\"212\" data-init-height=\"460\" title=\"St-Marys-5-950x460\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/aylesburysociety.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/St-Marys-5-950x460-1.jpg\" data-width=\"438\" data-height=\"212\" style=\"aspect-ratio: auto 950 \/ 460;\"><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the 1960\u2019s when Aylesbury was being \u2018upgraded\u2019 to meet the demands of the 20th century, some of the old parts around the parish church of St Mary\u2019s escaped the bulldozers.
